two in one: santogold & madonna

Santogold: Godiva!

I’m in the process of courting Santogold. She’s a strong candidate for mother of my first born. So let me just go ahead and say the album is not for a mainstream pedestrian radio head. Meaning if you can’t get enough of Lil Wayne, Trina, and Soulja Boy this one might not be your taste. I think this record is delicious. “My Superman” is definitely my favorite cut. It’s like trance, an enraged trance that takes over your body and halts your heart—hauntingly beautiful. I’m not sure if this album will be number one, but it should be. Her voice is unique, her style is one of her defining characteristics, and her record is nutritious (does a body good). Its versatile in that I listened to it walking to campus then later in the tub—trust me that is a huge deal. Support SANTOGOLD! Gotdammit! Seriously, preview the tracks online and one you fall for her, go support her. She needs to make her mark on the music scene. Even if you just think she’s cute or her video is bizarre, get her album! If she were chocolate she'd be a golden Godiva truffle.

Hard Candy: Now & Laters

David’s mom—most of you know as Madonna released her eleventh studio album. My philosophy on Madonna is “if you STILL got it, go for it”. Though she’s been in the game for a couple of decades now, the music on this album is yet another reinvention for the “material mom”. Madge (I would love to know where she acquired that nickname) is basically ripping yall up with her new release. This is a banging dance record. I’m not a die hard Madonna worshipper. I sort of hitched a ride on the bandwagon officially when she released “Confessions of the Dance Floor” in 2005. This record gives me a Feist and Britney Spears wrestling on roller rink floor over neon skates. Very bubbly and pop with some edge—what else can we expect from the soon to be fifty year old legend. I have no idea what the recording process was like, but it sounds like she had fun making this record—random thought. Stand out tracks include “Beat Goes On” (my favorite track), Heartbeat, Spanish Lesson, & (the song I vehemently hated initially that grew on me) Four Minutes. I give this record a B+.

(p.s. "Four Minutes" is actually 4:04 long—that annoys me.)

(p.p.s. Both of these fantastic fenomes' have HARD videos. If you haven't had the pleasure of viewing "L.E.S. Artistes" youtube it, and I love Madonna and Justin's take on the Bodies Exhibit)

BRB.

I'm desperately trying to finish listening to the Santogold album---I should have a review up soon. I'm really focusing on finishing school. I've got a few more papers to crank out and a final on Saturday, then it's bye bye GSU. Sunday is the day I've been anticipating for months now. Yes, the Glow In The Dark Tour will be here in Atlanta. I'm so ready, in the mean time look for that Santogold review and as soon as schools done count on hearing from me a lot more.

Shine on!

John Legends protégé Estelle is big across the pond and has been making waves in the states. Her single “American Boy” is gaining buzz and so is her album. I was very curious, because there was such a variation in her two singles. “Wait A Minute” was very blues, jazz club—“American Boy” is a little more mainstream and Kanye adds to the flair of the track. I didn’t know what to expect from her album. The results are in! “Shine” is well worth the investment. This British bombshell puts me in the mind of Lauryn Hill—I’m not comparing, but there are some similarities. The tracks blend R&B with a hint of reggae and hip-hop. She worked with several producers creating an assortment of sounds to choose from. From Will.i.Am, Mark Ronson, to Swizz Beatz she’s got a well blended record. I’ve grown fond of her over the last few months. She’s got her own style which I sincerely appreciate. It’s a good first album, very rich and soulful. I give it a B+.

Stand Out Tracks:

Pretty Please (Love Me),

American Boy

& More Than Friends.

Lessons To Learn

Lauryn Hill, I miss you. I’ve been listening to her on and off all day. “The Miseducation” was the one of the first records I fell in love with. I need her kindred spirit to guide me through these next few weeks. Life is hitting me and friends pretty hard. Though we have to take the good with the bad, sometimes it’s easier said than done. I wish I was in a better position to help my friends, but I can barely help myself. All I can do is use my word. All I can do is put it up to my higher power. I say my because I have different beliefs than a lot of people, but I keep them to myself, because so often people tell me for one reason or another I don't live my life they I should (rather the way they pretend to live theirs) I believe you should form your own spiritual thoughts after exploring what the world has to offer. Don't go status quo, think and believe for yourself. The higher power is more of a being so I don't say he or she. I believe in the entity, from which we came and that which we shall one day return to. Guidance, patience, clarity, and truth are needed to tread the heavy waters of distress to come.

Hopefully I will get the opportunity to shop more once I find
a quality job and I walk across that stage May 10.
Until then, I'll browse online and dream of a cruel summer wardrobe.

Josephine Baker

Last night I burned the midnight oil to churn out half of my philosophy paper. I'm a little off this morning so I decided to relax until about 12. Anywho, I was sitting on my work computer on Google and I typed in the first name that came to mind, Josephine Baker. I just spent the greater part of my morning reading about her life. She lead a very interesting life. I remember that made for tv movie about her life--staring Lynn Whitfield. Then I started thinking how the world works. Then I pondered about what the rest of my life would be like. Finally, I thought about all the untold stories about other people like Josephine Baker and how we'd never know them--it made me a little sad. I'm still listening to Gotye.

BEST MORNING EVER

Why? On my brisk walk to campus this morning I just happened to look down to see a fresh $20 bill staring back at me, I scooped her up and decided it would be best to give her a good home. She is the first $20 in my trip fund.

To top it off I decided to switch shifts today and go to UCS because I need to work on a paper for my 11:00 class. An array of assorted muffins, cinnamon rolls, and fresh fruit was arranged in the entrance to my office.
I love fresh fruit in the morning if I could I would have it everyday.
All I can say is "let the church say amen".

is that chocolate or poop?

I must see this
freaking movie.

Word On The St33t.

  • Big Boi's "hip hop ballet" premiered last Thursday featuring a lot of Purple Ribbon peeps, including the legendary miss Janelle Monae. I was unable to attend the shows that ran from Thursday throughout the weekend, but a source told me it was phenomenal (Miss Janelle received a standing ovation for her riveting performance of Sincerely, Jane --of course.) check this link for an article in the latest edition of Creative Loafing
[shout out to Ms. Borders for the heads up on the article]

  • I attended, volunteered, and performed for the 1st Annual Knowing is Peace Festival. This was an initiative created by my former boss C. Love of Love Entertainment [major shoutouts to her for her vision and follow through]. It promotes HIV awareness and the importance of knowing your status. Student who got tested during one of the sponsored testings received tickets to the show. For it's first year, I think it was dope. The rain almost put a damper on the day but we all pressed on and it was successful.

No Love: Not In This Club

For the record I'm not a fan of Usher's
new song "Love In This Club".
The song doesn't do it for me at all.

Happy 80th to the incomparable Maya Angelou!

The sun has come.
The mist has gone.
We see in the distance...
our long way home.
I was always yours to have.
You were always mine.
We have loved each other in and out of time.
When the first stone looked up at the blazing sun
and the first tree struggled up from the forest floor
I had always loved you more.
You freed your braids...
gave your hair to the breeze.
It hummed like a hive of honey bees.
I reached in the mass for the sweet honey comb there....
God...how I love your hair.
You saw me bludgeoned by circumstance.
Lost, injured, hurt by chance.
I screamed to the heavens....loudly screamed....
Trying to change our nightmares to dreams...
The sun has come.
The mist has gone.
We see in the distance our long way home.
I was always yours to have.
You were always mine.
We have loved each other in and out
in and out
in and out
of time.

PSA: Let It Cool, always.

Today I want to talk to you about the dangers of egg drop soup. I went to my local Asian spot yesterday with two of my friends/neighbors for dinner. I ordered the egg drop soup because I didn't want rice for some reason. The soup was deceptive, my test sip gave me the false impression that the soup wasn't that hot. However, once I added more soup to the spoon and took a confirmatory taste I was burned, severely. I decided not to post the pictures of severely scorched tongue instead I want to post this picture of an ordinary bowl of egg drop soup...don't be fooled, it may look golden and delicious but it's not. It's yellow and cooked in the bowels of hell.
Here endith the lesson.

Quiet On The Set

N.E.R.D. "Everyone Nose" video shoot.
source:http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1584718/20080403/nerd.jhtml
According to several eyewitness accounts, a violent brawl erupted Wednesday night on the New York set of N.E.R.D.'s forthcoming music video. The outburst nearly shut down production of the clip, which was filmed inside the Madison nightclub, and at least one person was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Both Lindsay Lohan and Kanye West reportedly visited the set at different times during the shoot, but were not present for the disturbance.

The incident occurred just after 9:30 p.m., sources said, and involved two men, both of whom were serving as extras. The clip — for the track "Everyone Nose," from N.E.R.D.'s upcoming LP, Seeing Sounds — will apparently feature a giant, dancing nose (the song's subject is cocaine use) designed by noted artist Kaws, and unclothed strippers.

While N.E.R.D.'s publicist could not be reached for comment at press time, sources who were on set at the time said that none of the band's members were in the club at the time of the fracas. Lohan — who reportedly makes a cameo in the clip — left the set about three hours before the incident took place, eyewitnesses said.

"Some dude, one of the extra guys, jumped another extra and started calling him a pu--- and punching him in the face," said one of the club's employees, who spoke to MTV News but did not want to be named. "They fell against the bar, and there were all these beer bottles up there which were being used as props, and the bottles fell over and broke. The guy who was jumped, his arm got cut, and he started bleeding all over the place. The other dude ran away. It wasn't such a big deal. The police did show up, and the dude that was attacked went to hospital and sat there for two hours before he was seen."

Filming later resumed when several union workers who'd threatened to walk off the set were asked to stay, the eyewitness said, adding that workers were complaining that the production team behind the video hadn't hired enough security staff and felt the work environment had become unsafe.

No arrests have been made, and police are not actively investigating the matter, an NYPD spokesperson said. The man who was assaulted was treated for his injuries and released.

One eyewitness claimed there was "blood everywhere" inside the club after the fight, and that several production assistants were instructed to clean it up. Sources claim the fight broke out while cameras were rolling.

James Demasi of New Day Management, which operates Madison, confirmed that the incident did occur and brought the shoot to a complete halt.

"I think the whole fight was about getting more camera time," Demasi said. "I was there, and the fight was between two males. One of them was taunting the other, and the extra who was being taunted jumped up and assaulted the individual who was taunting him. Some of the glass props broke, and the extra who was behind the attack fell down with the other guy, and cut his arm on the broken glass he fell on. They were pulled apart, and the guy who was attacked went to the hospital."

4 Minutes

1. This video is too cool for this song.
2. I love that effect that sort of ties in elements of the bodies exhibit.
3. Madonna reinvents herself again, but strangely, it feels like she's done this image before...is it time to try something different??

The Greatest Show On Earth?

My expectations for GITD are high, insurmountable no, but high yes.
Kanye needs to make good on his promise to present spectacle of epic
proportions. I refuse to be disappointed. I want to be able to say:
"That was the best fucking concert I've ever been to!". I went to his
first tour, it was "eh..." aight. This one needs to be something for
the record books.
