Asher Roth can actually rap---go figure. He spits about hot girls, weed, college life, music, and just being a white kid named Asher. He worked with Oren Yoel, Don Cannon, David Appleton, Novel, Ceelo, Keri Hilson, and Chester French. It's not your homeboy's hip-hop. There aren't any references to the hood, n-words (better not be), or the trap. "Lark on my Go-Kart" is the first track and it caught me off guard---I was startled because he had a nice flow. The drum laden track sounds like old head bob hip-hop from that point I let my guard down and relaxed. I like most of the songs, especially "His Dream" & "I Love College". I'm also fond of the song "La Di Da" produced by Don Cannon, I'm not sure exactly why but I think it's pretty dope. He raps about assorted life problems. A little struggle here, some pain there, and a dash of hope for the homies. I think I like it because the chorus is catchy. "As I Em" featuring Chester French is probably my favorite. He addresses the obvious comparisons people draw between him and the only other white rapper Eminem. I really like the track with it's bluesy guitars and drums. Asher spits: "I was in seventh grade when I heard the 'Slim Shady LP'/ My Mom brought it down when I was ironing(--Irony!)/ Getting out the wrinkles, just a little kid in middle school sink my teeth in anything to think I'm cool." Jazzy Pha gives his very best Ceelo impersonation for the track "Bad Day", which isn't a bad track either I just thought his singing style was kind of funny. Mind you, looking at the album as a whole he's not talking about anything enlightening but then again who does? It's simple, straight-forward commentary on the life of your average twenty something white guy.
I give it a B.

sad isn't the word...he's just a little kid.

...this article crushed me this morning.

Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other
forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large
group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood.

Loving The Future of Music

[read this article at EXAMINER.com PLEASE]
The saga continues...
Chester French's “Jacques Jams, Vol. 1: Endurance” hit the internet recently.
Thousands of people were immediately hospitalized for minor injuries because they were blown away.
LOVE THE FUTURE, an album I've been looking forward to for months drops tomorrow!
Chester French (because they are two of the greatest men to walk among us) put it on myspace today.
"Love The Future" is the official soundtrack Summer 2009.
I'm going to guide you through your listening experience because tomorrow you'll
go to your local record store, Target or Best Buy, iTunes, Rhapsody, whatever and you'll
purchase your copy of "Love The Future".

The songs I think you'll love endlessly:
Bebe Buell - goes hard. Chronicles groupie, love, orgasms. Sounds like two people bumping uglies backstage.
Time to Unwind - melodic and smooth. Sounds like friends frolicking on at the carnival after a few too many shots of yager.
Fingers - a love song to a you're lover the philanderer. Sounds like your friend who should dump is girlfriend but cant.
Beneath the Veil - a little country diddy. Sounds like John Wayne doing a set at Kanye's birthday party.
Not Over You - My favorite song.
Sleep - a lullaby for lover, dreamers, and me. <--(who gives a f*** about an oxford comma)

I wrote my first Chester French entry a year ago.
I said they reminded me of condensed version of Weezer and The Beach Boys.
This holds true. I love these guys, and the record too.
Get it when it drops.
These two demonstrate how talent and hard work equal success.
They went from two Harvard students to a full fledged musical force to be reckoned with.

I'm in love!

Saturday, April 11

I was thinking as I listened to the radio this morning:

In order to discover true innovation you have to look.
This blog was founded on that principle alone.
I respect energy, passion, ingenuity and an unbridled raw hunger to express oneself .
The birthing process is essential, the conception is so important to me.
I like to know that an artist didn't just pay a bunch of people to come up with something.
Rather the artist conceptualized their vision and fashioned it in a way that fulfills their artistic intent.
Sadly most of the most successful acts are puppets.
Because in order to make it in the music business, you have to sell and on a grand scale---
people are stupid, so music is thus reduced to simple catchy hooks and songs about nothing.
There's a difference between having a great team of people behind you and having a great team of people who make you who you are.
With that in mind, I'd like to encourage everyone to look.
LOOK around you!
Don't take the delightful dollops of bullshit we hear on the radio as the full spectrum.
There's so much out there.

[do they sell stereos without radios, if so please email me where so I can purchase one
to ensure that when I'm in my room I don't accidentally tune in even if just for a millisecond]

Kehinde Wiley

I came across this really talented artist online a few days ago. I've been meaning to check out his website and see his collections. I randomly saw one of his pieces somewhere and made a mental note to investigate him more. Turns out he's actually someone I've decided I love. He's known for paintings of modern African American men (from my generation) paired with a classic poses and old European portraiture. It's really quite interesting.
I also found an article on him in BusinessWeek, it's a few years old, it was about dream jobs.
Kehinde Wiley
$12,000-$40,000 per painting
This artist won’t be starving anytime soon. Known for his unique style in which old European portraiture meets modern hip-hop culture, 29-year-old Kehinde Wiley has a waiting list in the hundreds for his work. “I’m blessed to be in the place actualize what’s going on through my head,” says Wiley. He says his dream is for his work to appear in more museums and steer clear of auction houses, as they reduce art to a commodity. Exhibiting up to eight new works every three to six months, Wiley could take in over $1.5 million in a year if he’s productive enough.

"...Chester French's world is a musical universe in which everything's in play. The glorious "She Loves Everybody" mixes sensibilities equally drawing on Motown and power-pop. "Beneath the Veil" throws country twists into hip-hop aesthetics. "Neal" has echoes of swing, hip-hop and rock - with a guitar break paying tribute to the genius and magic fingers of Les Paul. And "Fingers" is just your basic orchestral-pop with, you know, a lap steel solo. There's a curtain-raising "Introduction," and a couple transition pieces ("The String Interlude" and "Country Interlude") to help tie it all together and stress that this is, overall, far more than just a collection of songs, but a whole statement."

Go Ham no GO APE!

After touring the festival circuit last year, director Ceri Levy's documentary about the Gorillaz will premiere on Babelgum.com on April 20. Filmed over the course of seven years, the movie -- aptly titled Bananaz -- offers a candid behind-the-scenes look at the real-life band behind the animated characters, following from the inception to the eventual evolution of co-founders Damon Albarn's and Jamie Hewlett's brainchild. Highlights include guest appearances by everyone from Danger Mouse and the late Ibrahim Ferrer to...Dennis Hopper? "Damon and Jamie had this track called 'Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head' on [2005's] Demon Days and they thought Dennis would be great to narrate it over music," says Levy. "They approached him and he said yes. Next thing I know, I'm sitting there like a child waiting for him to do his thing at this small little studio in London. It was pretty exciting when he walked in -- Dennis Hopper was in the room doing what Dennis Hopper does, and it was fantastic." He's not lying. Check out this exclusive clip of Hopper laying down his vocals.
I'm definitely gonna check this one out.

Friday, April 3

I was laying in bed listening to K-Os and I was thinking...

I connect more with musicians who above all else are artist--meaning, regardless of the voice or instrument their music and work expresses something truly meaningful. I respect that. Beyond the albums sales, number of hit records, Grammys, and endorsements there's the music---that is more important than any of the other bull. Popularity and radio play mean absolutely nothing to me because in the grand scheme people don't know what they really want---they want what people tell them to want. So a string of top ten hits doesn't mean your music is amazing or that you're changing the fabric of our culture with your revolutionary new dance, it means you've got a great team behind you, producers, writers, etc. You buy their tracks, and lyrics, throw in some of your own flavor and run with it. It's a big business transaction and selling is the art not the music. Don't get me wrong, everybody has bills and desires so I realize proper compensation is very important. It's just that these days it seems like it's more about the money and less about the music. Or maybe it's just me. Either way, now that I've completed that thought I'm off to bed.

Goodnight Moon.

I Like Lykke Li

Photobucket
Lykke Li is a Swedish import, she's 23 years old, blonde and sounds like a baby angel frolicking
in a field of white lilies and linen. Drake used her song "A Little Bit" on his mixtape. It's my favorite. Thus I felt the need to learn more about the mysterious voice behind the melody I cherish oh so much. She's sort of reminiscent of Dido if you crushed her voice into a powder and poured it on your tongue. Take a listen to her stuff on myspace, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. When I discover artist like Lykke Li, I'm inspired. Her voice isn't traditionally strong, she does not belt out ballads, nor is her music conventional. But I really like it.

Be Remorseful.
