Graduation Gift Perhaps...

The MIXA is basically a 1GB flash drive that’s been integrated into an audio cassette shell. The real appeal though comes with the MIXA website which allows you to interactively design a custom label for the tape. You can choose from a collection of pre-existing designs, which still offer a bit of customization, or upload your own images and graphics. Once the design is completed and the finished USB cassette arrives you can then load it up with your own ‘mix tape’ of MP3s.

awww...a message from JM.

Chase,

Janelle MonaeDuring recent years, you have followed me - Janelle Monáe - and my fellow Wondaland Arts Society members as we have embarked on an adventurous journey to bring people together through the power of art and music. This odyssey began because we at The Wondaland Arts Society set out to bond with true supporters, such as you, to build a space within the music industry where artists can paint new colors and create new sounds.

So first I would like to thank you Chase. Thank you for supporting Suite 1: The Chase. Thank you for supporting the idea of the suite. And thank you for supporting this message of hope and freedom. Because of your support we now have the opportunity to truly change things on a global scale through a unique partnership that will be formally announced today: a joint venture between my recording label, The Wondaland Arts Society and Bad Boy/Atlantic Records. In addition, Antwan 'Big Boi' Patton of Outkast will continue to serve as a collaborator and co-executive producer.

This venture is unprecedented: it will help the big embrace the power of the small. It will remind the world that creativity, imagination and beauty still matter. That people the world over have the same concerns: they love wonder. And they love a good story, a good melody, products that are put together with care and engineered to heal the soul. Simply put, this pact offers us a brand new way to make magic: we get to continue trying new ideas in a much bigger ocean. And we're more than excited about it.

Our new partners and colleagues at Bad Boy/Atlantic Records are excited about this joint venture as well. They strongly support my message and music. They are also quite aware of my core values and understand that they must be maintained and upheld at all costs.

These values are driven by the many experiences that have shaped my life and story thus far, and I take them quite seriously. I am striving to be a great light to my community, and throughout this relationship I want to make you proud on a global level because I represent you, my true supporters, both locally and around the world. That said, there may be times when I disagree with some of the ideas of my partners, friends or supporters, but rest assured that my core values will not be broken or compromised. I will stick fast to these ideals and will not allow the divisive policies and ideas of the past to marginalize or further segregate music lovers and true supporters of my music.

I feel this movement is beyond independent or mainstream. Soul or rock. Black or white. Pompadour or perm. Saddle shoes or high heels. It's about altering history through a great new era of music and art.

With these important things in mind, I would now like to invite you to join The Chase- an official assembly of Janelle Monáe ambassadors. This assembly is important to me: you have been hand selected to join this group because over time you have supported me in many ways--perhaps buying a CD or T-shirt, attending a show and screaming from the front row, or educating others about what it means to be an alien from outer space. Again Chase, thank you for your support, . And I look forward to working with you as we make the future a safer place for androids. To join this official delegation, visit this link: http://www.janellemonae.com/theChase.htm. Until then my friend...

Let The Chase Begin!!!!!
Sincerely,

Jane

AUSTIN, Texas -- When two slightly nerdy dudes take the stage -- or more precisely take to standing atop two bar chairs on the stage -- and proclaim they're the "new black Beastie Boys," it takes some chutzpah and a pretty good sense of humor.

Actually, it's exactly the kind of temerity and cheekiness it takes to name your group the Cool Kids.

The Chicago kids Chuck and Mikey (no last names necessary) were the de facto headliners for music blog Gorilla vs. Bear's South by Southwest party Wednesday at the Peacock in Austin. Combined with sets by Holy Fuck and Ghosthustler, the show was a strong start to the still-young festival.

For the uninformed, Cool Kids are the hip-hop version of the '80s nostalgia wave -- more young Run-DMCs than OMDs. And they own it. Their sound is awash in Rakim samples, Do the Right Thing references and 2 Live Crew beats. If they start running around with a guy calling himself Grandmaster it might be time to call the plagiarism cops, but even then they still deserve props.

All of this is to say their show was incredible, with even the effortlessly hip throwing their hands in the air. More photos from the show (plus some from outside, with ice cream!) and tracks from GvB's playlist for the party are after the jump.

Just before Cool Kids took the stage, Toronto noise rock band Holy Fuck threw down an incredible set. The band's sound on record has been described as a playpen on mescaline and it turns out the live show has the same feel, sans mescaline (presumably). HF's members surround themselves with musical toys (see below) and bang and thrash at them in a way music nerds and novices can appreciate.

What's different, though, between HF's records and live sound is the amount of energy. Noise rock is supposed to be enjoyed loud when rocking one's headphones. However, in a live setting where the loud is vibrating the room, it's even more dynamic and, surprisingly, the melodies seem even more pronounced and riotous. This band's name is going to be on the lips of many more music fans in the future (much to their mothers' chagrin, surely).

Finally, a note about Ghosthustler, who played a quick, yet wildly amazing, set before HF. This electronic/dance act from here in Texas was getting buzz before it was even getting gigs, and it's easy to see why. This is dance music for the kind of people who like to tune in and turn off. It's cerebral yet also completely pop-sounding. And live, even in a small bar with little wiggle room, it's impossible not to shake a tail feather.

Notice

Greetings:
I am four weeks from graduation. Three Weeks away from the Glow In The Dark Tour & a week away from a total and complete meltdown. Well, not really but I've never been this swamped as far as school stuff is concerned. I have no final exams, instead I have papers. Six to be exact, ranging from a eight to twenty pages in length. One is mere reflection on past concepts, another is more of a dense rhetorical analysis--then there are some that I don't even want to think about. Needless to say, I won't be as timely with my entries as usual. Bear with me, I promise to make an effort to at least do an entry every few days.

--sincerely yours.

Pharrell's Movement

Pharrell Williams Says N.E.R.D. Harness A 'Big Monster Of Energy' On Forthcoming LP
(source: MTV)

Grace Jones was a slave to the rhythm, and N.E.R.D. were slaves to the energy when they recorded their new LP, Seeing Sounds.

"We didn't care about genres; we're not doing this for the money," Pharrell Williams said at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. "We're doing this for people who pledge allegiance to our movement."

Skateboard P said that his fans want to rock out and be taken on an emotional roller coaster, and the only way to do that is to give some full-on speaker-blasting records. Their sound this time around is not necessarily club music, but it's definitely European-influenced, layered and textured. "It's a big album of LSD, sonic drug," said bandmate Chad Hugo.

N.E.R.D.'s other member, Shay, further elaborated on the album title. It was inspired by the neurological phenomenon synesthesia, which combines two senses. They were fascinated after learning about it while watching the Discovery Channel.

"It's a mixture of senses that may cause a person to experience colorful hearing, auditory smell," Shay explained. "For example, you might see something, and it might trigger a song. You might hear something, and it might trigger a taste in your mouth. When we created this album, it was the music we envisioned while creating it. We decided it would be the appropriate title for the album."

"If you really analyze that," Pharrell added, "the most inspiration is probably deep inside a synesthesiac. So for us, 'seeing sounds' is what we relate to the most. We figured we'd make an album out of it.

"Energy and emotion was the criteria [while recording], but we made the music anticipating the [live] show," he continued. "That was the most important thing. ... [The song] 'Spazz' is [a] nostalgic, hip-hop feeling with some drum and bass. It becomes a big, tall monster. It's almost like this big gorilla looking down at you. If he smacks you, he kills you. His fingers are the size of your body. That's kinda what we're doing in N.E.R.D. We're facing this big monster of, of what we know is out there, of what we see, that big monster of energy."

N.E.R.D. will get ample opportunity to test out their songs on the Glow in the Dark Tour with Kanye West. They open for the Louis Vuitton Don beginning April 16. The first single from their June LP is "Everyone Nose," which deals with cocaine.

I have no idea what "rhetorical artifact" I

then I thought about an album---which could be
a stroke of genius or disaster of epic proportions.

Ranting.

I feel a little stifled by my own thoughts and emotions. I haven't vented since I deactivated my other blog a few months ago. So from this point on I will try to intermingle some of my personal admissions with the music in my life.
I'm currently soaking in the sounds of John Mayer-Continuum. He's got soul. I feel the blues in this album. I'm not blue though, I'd say I was a beige/egg shell white (kinda blank, but on the brink--if you will). This record is really soothing though. I'm five weeks away from a huge event, and I'm at the acceptance stage. I'm at my academic peak--I've never been more on top of my classes (which is good considering the intense workload I took on to graduate this semester). Overall, fear of the unknown far outweighs the excitement. It will pass. It must. Right now, I feel like I'm "Slow Dancing in A Burnin' Room".

Celebrity Spotting!

So I was riding down Northside Drive with a friend about 20 minutes ago. A sleek white drop top Bentley is in front of us. I think to myself "damn thats a nice car!". My friend says "that guy kind of look like Neyo. The driver looks in the mirror and we realize IT IS! My first official celebrity spotting in Atlanta. For some reason we followed him down Northside to Marietta St. for no apparent reason. I felt dirty like a paparazzi.

Welcome to The Dollhouse.

So I'm sitting here laughing at this episode of Making the Band. Decided to take a listen to Danity Kane's new album Welcome to The Dollhouse. I'm going to say it. The production on this album is fucking sick. The vocals are blended to perfection. I HATED! I repeat HATED their first album. Sorry I felt like it was just a sloppy mess of an album--it felt very prepackaged and generic. This one, though still has that generic appeal I can look beyond the fact they didn't spend a significant amount of time penning these tracks, developing the sound etc. It's is a good record with a lot of qaulity tracks. These ladies sound fantastic. I'm really feeling "Bad Girl", "Damaged", "Sucka 4 Love". But don't take my word for it, I encourage you to go check it out for yourselves.

Imogen Heap)))))))))

You've probably heard "Hide & Seek" a haunting track by this English singer songwriter. I'm an avid fan of her work. "Speak For Yourself" is a dope album. Imogen is (though I say this often) a rare find. Her music is reflective of the world. Listening to her albums I sometimes find myself in a trance. Not meditative, but in a pensive state of complete tranquilty. She has a new home recording studio and some of her new stuff is up for your listening pleasure. For the new stuff go to:

I miss her.

Its been too long since I've been in the presence of the great, wonderful, magnificent Janelle Monae. Her shows are an experience. You feel the music seeping through your pours, the lyrics scroll across your eyes, and the lights blind you with pure bliss. Her poise and radiance draw me in. She'll be performing at
Old Smith's Bar on March 21, 2008 (definitely gonna go to that!)
She'll also be performing in "bIG", at the Fox Theatre. According to her myspace she will perform
from "Metropolis" with the Atlanta Ballet. I'm going to see this too, I know this will be so spectacular, besides, I missed Alvin Ailey.

I enjoy her voice.
I'm pleased.

So I was doing some reminiscing.
I love this classic Brandy.

Likufanele

I'm obsessed with this song. It reaches this spot that I can't reach, soothing a certain portion of my brain that has been uncared for. Like a lot of songs used in various shows or movies, I KNOW I've heard this track before, when and where will forever remain unclear. The only clarity I have in this situation is that I'm a sincere fan of Zero 7, I love their whole situation. This track is beyond.

Kevin Michael's ALLHIPHOP.COM Interview!

better yet, I'll just post the transcript here.
it's from last year, but its news to me.

Armed with an undeniable sense of humor and big dreams, this Philly native with an afro is bound to catch your eye. But for the musician in Kevin Michael, the most important of the five senses to capture is your hearing. Equipped with this arsenal, there’s little doubt you won't, at least, take notice of the cheeky Downtown Records constituent. Kevin Michael debuts his self-titled album filled with messages of unity, contagious melody, and collaborations with veteran and new musicians that will have other new artists coveting exactly the same.

AllHipHop.com Alternatives catches up with Kevin on a rainy Thursday afternoon, during his debut album release week. As far as the ideas in his head, there’s very little that Michael leaves to the imagination. The sincere 22-year-old will tell you, without fail, what’s really on his mind. Even during moments of earnest humility, Michael delivers with a punch, “I get sick of myself very easily, having to sit in a room and talk about me all day long.” Sitting in a conference room, dressed in his customary attire of a vintage-tee, a jacket, and jeans, he fesses up to his love for Beyonce (watch out HOV!), what makes him feel naked, and his definition of musical success.

AllHipHop.com Alternatives: Do you style your hair differently than an afro?

Kevin Michael: I had it braided yesterday, but today is an on-day – make the ‘fro flat-free. If it’s an off-day and I don’t have anything to do, I got a du-rag on or a hoody.

AHHA: How does it feel to finally have an album out? I read somewhere you shopped around for labels when you were 12 years old.

Kevin Michael: It feels like, “Wow, I can’t believe my CD is out!” I don’t know…I feel like there’s so much work to be done. So, I’m not really excited yet. I’ll be excited when I have a Grammy, and I’m not even close to having a Grammy yet.

AHHA: Is that your definition of musical success? What is your definition of musical success?

Kevin Michael: I never thought of anything else but being like…[claps hands] the biggest!

AHHA: What’s the “biggest” to you?

Kevin Michael: The biggest! A Grammy! Multi-platinum selling albums, great songs that are timeless, heavy respect as not just, “He’s got some cool songs.” A real respected artist like, “Oh, s**t Kevin Michael is dope!” Ten years from now people saying, “When I was growing up I was listening to Kevin Michael, and he inspired me to do this that or the other.”

AHHA: What was the recording process like?

Kevin Michael: It was long – April to December of last year. Then we used songs from 2004 [and] 2005. It was everything and nothing that I expected recording an album to be. I went into the process with my mind thinking it was going to be great, the whole time, and it wasn’t. I can remember four months into it I was like, “I hate these songs!”

AHHA: Why? Because you had heard them so much?

Kevin Michael: Yes! I'm a person that as soon as I get done with something, a week later I’m tired of listening to it. To listen to my album is like [listening to] nails on a chalkboard. Who was I with? Someone who [I was with] was playing my album. I was like, “No, you got to turn that off. You can’t listen to me, in front of me!” It’s very odd. It’s like getting naked in front of your 65-year-old male doctor – that weird feeling.

AHHA: What song changed the whole album for you?

Kevin Michael: “Hood Buzzin’” – to me [it’s] the most vocally challenging song because the lead is so amazing – if I do say so myself – and the backgrounds were very demanding. I had never recorded like that before with The Clutch. It was a learning process for me. I’m a perfectionist, but they’re like perfectionists.

AHHA: Do you have any other passions besides music?

Kevin Michael: I love to sleep, when I get a chance. I love to eat. I’m a 300 pound man in a 150 pound man’s body. Shop! All the damn time, I love to spend money. I love clothes, clothes are my friend. I like to drink red wine, on occasion, with pretty girls. That’s about it.

AHHA: How much sleep do you get on a typical night?

Kevin Michael: Tonight I’m going to have…I’ll go home, so I’ll have a decent seven hours – eight hours. On a usual night, anywhere between three and six [hours].

AHHA: What music are you listening to now?

Kevin Michael: I’m listening to Kanye, of course! I’m listening to Lupe’s new single, it’s amazing – “Superstar” is amazing. I’m listening to M.I.A. When I first heard her I just thought she made a whole lot of noise and a whole bunch of sounds. I was like, “What the f**k is this? I can’t listen to this!” It gave me a headache at first. But I played a show with her this summer after Lollapalooza [for an] after-party. To see her live, you have to see her live to understand what’s going on. Then I got into Kala. [Also,] “It’s Britney, b**ch!” I’m listening to Britney [Spears] because Danja is the s**t. I don’t care what nobody says.

AHHA: Anything you listen to that would surprise people?

Kevin Michael: I just downloaded a bunch of [David] Bowie. I need to get my Bowie up! Ya dig? I need to get my Ziggy Stardust up! I [also] listen to a lot of Bollywood music, because they have a different scale of music – they have half-notes and we don’t have half-notes. I’m not a trained vocalist, so I’m always looking to sing better.

AHHA: Did you ever have a normal day-job?

Kevin Michael: That’s so funny! I just talked about my day job.

AHHA: What was it? If you were talking about it, you got to tell AHHA!

Kevin Michael: You can’t laugh. You can’t rag if I tell you…I used to sell leather coats – without commission! That was my only job though. I quit the Gap in a day. I quit JC Penney in two days.

AHHA: What’s your favorite place to go when you’re overseas?

Kevin Michael: My favorite place is London, but I get treated the best in Germany.

AHHA: What do you consider to be good treatment?

Kevin Michael: Warner, in Germany, they just go hard out there! “What do you need? What do you want? Okay, we need to work, let’s go!” S**t is tight. Schedule is tight. I don’t like any loose ends. I got to call-out London right now. London was not popping the last time I was over there. They didn’t have their s**t together. If you’re going to have me in a specific territory for like two days, or three days, my schedule needs to be: A-B-C, boom-boom-boom, this happens right after the other. They’ll get it together.

AHHA: Have you met your musical hero yet?

Kevin Michael: I can’t pick one musical hero, right? The people that I love – I LOVE! If I’m into you, if I’m really invested in you, I really get into you. So there are a lot of people that I look up to and I can’t wait to meet. Okay, I’m not afraid to say it. When I meet Beyonce I’m going to s**t my pants. I’m so…it’s really scary…I’m so into Beyonce that I don’t want to meet her until I deserve to meet her. I don’t want to walk up to Beyonce, “I’m your biggest fan!” The day that I finally meet her I want it to be, “Oh, s**t you’re Kevin Michael!” “Oh s**t, you’re Beyonce!” I’m not worthy, I’m not worthy.

AHHA: When an artist comes up against adversity and gets through it is when he becomes defined. As of this moment, what’s been something you’ve gotten through?

Kevin Michael: My adversity right now is people embracing the single [“It Don’t Make Any Difference”]. I think that my music is a little different than what’s on radio right now. Radio doesn’t really know how to break it, people really don’t know – they like it, but can they really get into it? It’s cool. I’m up for the challenge. It’s going to take time. I don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon...until Downtown tells me it’s time to take a hike!

We Salute:Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes

(bio taken directly from Wikipedia)

Travis McCoy (born August 5, 1981) is the lead vocalist of the alternative hip-hop group Gym Class Heroes. He grew up in Geneva, New York in a mixed race household. His father is black and his mother is white. He is 6'5".

He made his MTV debut in the summer of 2002, as he appeared on stage at the beach house on a standard nation-wide MC Battle that was held on the MTV show Direct Effect.[1]

Travis also has a side-project called Bernie Allen. The Bernie Allen's only album titled Who is... was produced by Sie-1 and released prior to The Papercut Chronicles. Occasionally, Gym Class Heroes will play the Bernie Allen song Catapult Complex live.

Travis' most recent side project (active as of December 2007) is Tequila Mockingbird. Also in the band is Nick Scimeca, who worked for Clandestine Industries (a clothing line by Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz) and is responsible for the signing of Gym Class Heroes to Decaydance Records. Travis has posted several demos from the band on his blog and promises an EP/album early this year. [1]

I'm listening to GCH and thought I'd salute Trav, cause he's a big deal. Here's him and Pete.
