Album Review: Priscilla Renea "Jukebox"

Photobucket

Prisilla Renea is the cutest little hipster singer-songwriter with mocha-almond skin and a double
mint smile since...well ever. A few years ago she was a teenager belting songs in her room and
uploading them to youtube. Her talent and vocal chops landed her a deal and flashforward she's
releasing her debut record for the world. I liked for her quirky personality and cutesy videos
but after listening to this album I must give her some sincere props as a vocalist and songwriter.
This is a solid debut record.

'Dollhouse' is the insanely catchy first single from this album with an equally adorable video.
'Lovesick' is a potential single as well, very poppy and catchy (well written too).
'Pretty Girl' a record about self esteem that tugged my heartstrings a little (because
we all have a little insecure teenage girl inside of us). 'Baby Please' is mid tempo ballad
about a bad break-up; unrequited love sucks. 'Rockabye Baby' almost songs like a show
tune to me, it's about unprotected teenage sex and unplanned pregnancy--- It's pretty
clever you have to listen to it. She uses several nursery rhyme and storybook characters
to tell the narrative. 'Bacon & Eggs' is about the "give and take" of relationships, not
my personal favorite song. It's not as progressive as the others. 'Mr. Workabee' is about
a workaholic boyfriend, it's cool. If you're not listening it sounds like a song from Barney
& Friends (that could be a good or bad thing). 'Stonegarden' is a beautiful ballad
about loneliness (my 2nd favorite track from the record). 'City Love' chronicles a relationship
that's moving too fast. 'Fixing My Hair' (my favorite song from the record) is a love song.

This album is made for young lovers. It's gentle, all of the tracks have a soft plush feel to them.
I'm very impressed. She makes music that is a reflection of her it seems. This record didn't
have any filler tracks, it followed the same trend throughout and there was cohesion.
I like Priscilla Renea, I give this album a B+.

Album Review: Kid Sister + Ultraviolet

Photobucket
"Ain't nobody out here making shit, quite like me, quite like this."
--Kid Sister "Big N' Bad"
This record oozes energy. It's crazy! These tracks are amazing. Her lyrical style is
very different from most female emcees. She's sort on her one steez (can't believe
I just said that). She stands out in a way that I can respect. She's not a Trina or
a Nicki Minaj (both of whom I respect...well?...nevermind that). Kid Sister is
creative, fun, vibrant, and this record is a reflection of all that. I can only
imagine what this record will sound like in a car. I have to give her kudos for not
having to base her music around explicit sexual content. She doesn't brag about her
sexual prowess or talking about how big her ass is. She still snaps though. I
personally love 'Get Fresh', 'You Ain't Really Down', 'Right Hand Hi' & 'Life On TV".
It's clear that she had the time of her life making this record and if she didn't it
sounds like it. I give this record a B++

Album Review: WALE 'Attention Deficit.'

Photobucket
Wale's debut album Attention Deficit is a magnificent recording. I'm say this with all seriousness,
it's the RAP ALBUM of the YEAR. The record is COHESIVE as fuck. It flows seamlessly and the
content is substantial. The cover alone speaks to something that most contemporary hip-hop
artist actively ignore (& contribute to). With collaboration with Bun B, Chrisette Michelle,
Pharrell, Lady Gaga, and K'Naan he's making she he burst on the scene in a big way.
The production is reflective of his eclectic taste. You hear hints of blues guitars and horns on
"Mirrors", nostalgic samples mixed with kacks and drums on "Pretty Girls", and heavy beat
on "90210". Wale is one to watch of for people. Unfortunately the masses will sleep on him,
HARD. I think people are a little to preoccupied with the Jay Z record. I can honestly say this
record is a better record than Blueprint 3. As a rapper, Wale offers a unique perspective because
he isn't the typical trapstar. Check his mixtapes! Introduce yourself. His work spans
various genres. Look up "W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E." There are a lot of really amazing tracks on this
record. 'Shades' featuring Chrisette Michelle tackles intra-racism (think brown paper bag test),
it's a great song.

"They say black is beautiful
But ask them beautiful light girls if it's black they attract to usually
What if Barack's skin was all black?
Truthfully would he be a candidate or just a black in community?
We as black dudes tend to lack unity
And them blacker girls ain't on the tube usually
Right now at 23 I ain't mad at them reds no more
But for long time I had gone cold blind
Full of my own insecurity
It was holding me
Back to reds, I ain't know how to act
They would get the cold shoulder
And know it was an act, a defense mechanism
What I thought that I lacked (confidence)"

'Beautiful Bliss' featuring J. Cole & Melanie Fiona makes me do the studio bop.
It's a great collaboration. '90210' is my favorite song on the album.
It's a narrative about the stereotypical Beverly Hills girl with superficial aspirations,
a coke habit and an eating disorder.

"And she throws up whatever she eats
She leave the bathroom wit a nose bleed
Regular girl, Celebrity dreams
She is...(90210)
She live her whole life like tv
And she would do anything for everything
Regular girl, Celebrity dreams
She is...(90210)"

I'm not sure why this track struck such a chord with me but it did so I'm sure some
you will like it. There so many other great songs on this album. If you're not a person
who buys music, neither am I. But Wale deserves his coins for this record. So hop on
iTunes or skidaddle down to Best Buy and purchase this album. A+

hubba hubba???

i saw the 'video phone' video. it moved me not. a lot of people like (and it speaks to their taste).
i'm tired of blank backgrounds, weave patting choreography and posing. i honestly was excited to
see two titans collide and create something stunning, especially after the release date was
postponed. ultimately the video was a multicolored version of 'check up on it' (another well
written insta-classic). i don't really know why laga gaga was present? she served no propose.
she was basically a Caucasian shadow (miming beyonce). i'm all for pr but she should have
politely declined and went on with prepping for the release of 'the fame monster'. i'm over so
the b stans, simply because they don't know how to critique or choose not too. if she makes it
they swoon & it baffles me. i like a lot of different artist but i stan for no one because no one is
that good
(except prince). i like to dialogue but all i've been hearing is "she looked good.", "she
went off.", etc and so on. beyond costume changes, make up, ass shaking & posing there is no
meat to this clip. like none. it could just as easily be photoshoot footage with music attached.
it would be one thing if this was done purposely (that's definitely not the case). i don't know,
when it comes to art, pop culture, and creativity i often feel alone. people are too cavalier,
tossing accolades and distinction around so freely. the queen? honestly? "she's sells records!"
so does Soulja Boy. she ain't my damn queen. don't get me wrong, she's a great performer and
singer. that's about it. anyway, i digress. that video was lame. if you can honestly tell me you
thought it was significant, creative and well crafted you should seek professional help.
k-thanks-bye.

i couldn't post it here, i just couldn't.

Stillness Is The Move

Photobucket
got this from PITCHFORK:
If Solange Knowles isn't sampling Boards of Canada or getting Jay-Z and Beyoncé into Grizzly Bear, she's jamming out to Dirty Projectors. She's been bumping DP so much, in fact, that she decided to go ahead and cover the Brooklyn band's Bitte Orca standout "Stillness Is the Move", which always sounded like a monster R&B track in disguise anyway.

There's currently no official release planned for the cover-- Solange just really liked the song. Listen and download after the jump:

Film Studies: Director Spotlight on
Lee Daniels

Photobucket
[SOURCE: http://rodonline.typepad.com/rodonline/ ]

OUT magazine is slowly rolling out its honorees for the prestigious OUT 100. Filmmaker Lee Daniels, director of the critically-acclaimed Precious, makes this year's list:

"If Daniels wins best director at this year’s Oscars for the devastatingly beautiful Precious—as he almost certainly will—he will be the first gay African-American to take the honor. The producer of not-so-lightweight films like Monster’s Ball and The Woodsman, Daniels is on his way to collecting a trophy case full of awards (the film has already won top prizes at the Sundance and Toronto film festivals) and securing himself a spot alongside directors like Alexander Payne and Ang Lee as a distinctive voice of his generation."

On a related note, Lee Daniels talks to the Chicago Free Press about the challenge of being an openly gay black director in Hollywood.

For me, I think the gay part is not an issue. But more the black gay part is a bigger issue. As a gay man, gay men, there so many of them in Hollywood and (they’re) decision makers and it’s a cult, I think. I don’t have to worry about prejudices right now, anymore. I fought so long all my life—prejudices about being gay, about being victimized because I was gay, being victimized because I was black, being victimized because I was gay and black. I’m so happy at 50 years old, that I’m being embraced for my spirit and for me. And it’s so overwhelming. It’s just so beautiful that people can accept me for me and being open. I don’t have to lie.

Precious, which is executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, opened Friday in limited release and earned some $1.8 million at the box office. The film is showing at only 18 theaters nationwide. Its $100,000 per screen average is an industry record.

Lykke Li + Youth Novels
Album Review

Photobucket
Lykke Li is the best thing to come from Sweden since IKEA.
She sounds like a baby angel frolicking in a field of white lilies
and linen sheets. This record teeters a line between eletronic
and just plain old indie. I'm very fond of "Let It Fall", it's extr-
emely catchy and simple. She's very indie so keep that in mind
if you decided to get this album. It's a great record. I'm enjoying
it. A few other notable tracks include "A Little Bit" (Drake cover-
ed it), "Hanging High", & "Breaking It Up". I suggest this one.

N.E.R.D. has a new singer.

Photobucket
This is news to me:
Claiming that their music is now ‘very 3-D’, Pharrell Williams says NERD are working on a new album ‘Instant Gratification’ with new member Rhea. Rumor that NERD have a new member named Rhea has been confirmed by Pharrell Williams. “Musically, we’re just somewhere else [with her],” he told MTV News. “The music is now very 3-D. It’s something you have to hear.” “We’re definitely somewhere else,” he continued. “I want to leave that impact moment for when you purchase your download and you purchase your CD. The music is very three-dimensional. We’re just really excited. We feel like NERD has always been the punks of hip-hop and the outcasts of alternative music – just a little different. But this time, we’re taking no prisoners.”

According to publication, Rhea auditioned for NERD via Skype. Her rendition of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” impressed the band. “It was just a really good time,” she recalled. “When I came in there and I met them and they heard me sing, I think they decided it was the right fit.” Report that NERD appointing a female member was brought to surface in August by Fam-Lay, the rapper signed to The Neptunes’ label, Star Trak Records. In the same month, the Hip-Hop group, which consist of Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo and Shay Haley, brought Rhea on-stage during their performance at Lovebox in London. NERD are now prepping to release a new album “Instant Gratification” which is expected to be released in 2010. As for this year, they will be supporting Jay-Z for his upcoming “Blueprint 3” tour along with Wale and J. Cole.

Update: September 2nd
After all the hype that is been with Rhea in this last 2 weeks being a new member of NERD, Fam-Lay now says Rhea is only a new Star Trak Artist “@desio988 RHEA is P’s New artist!!!3:25 PM Aug 25th from TwitterBerry“

Update: August 25th
Who is this girl Rhea allways dancing on stage with NERD at their Tour? Well first it seemed like a average artist who just been touring with NERD but nah. According to Fam-Lay, the 25 year old Guyana born Canadian native is NERD’s new member. „Her names Rhea.. She’s the new member of N.E.R.D.!! & she dope!!“Rhea is prepping her as yet untitled debut for a 2009 release on DJ Clue’s Independent Label Cluemanati, the lead single Choreographer feat. Jadakiss entered the Hip Hop/R&B Charts at No. 23. The track helmed by production The Justice Beats Of America (DJ Clue & Troy Oliver).

Rhea who attended the Berklee College of music in Boston, relocated to New York to pursue her music career. She quickly landed a job doing Commercials for Cover Girl, Diet Pepsi & McDonalds among others. Through the connections she made there, she began working with producers and writing songs with such as the Next Selection artists Uness and Mysto & Pizzi. Last year Rhea met DJ Clue through mutual friends and it was the musical union for which she’d been hoping. For more info, Check out her MySpacePage, her Blogsite & her Twitter Page. This girl right here is damn sexy and can sing. Check out the videos below.
