Run This Town? Meh.

So I'll start this entry off by saying; I'm not a huge huge huge Jay Z fan. Don't get me wrong I definitely grew up listening to Jay Z, I enjoy a lot of his songs, but not enough to ever want to see him live or anything like that. I think he's a great rapper but a lot of his stuff is either hit or miss with me. A lot of this stems from me not being a HUGE fan of Rap music in general. I listened to "Run This Town" a few times since it leaked online. I will say I like NO I.D. as a producer, he's definitely making his mark. The song itself is sort reminiscent of T.I.'s "Live Your Life"---maybe it's just me. Similar tempo & feel + plus Rihanna is featured on both tracks. It underwhelms me. The video I really like. Anthony Mandler directed it. This year he directed Robin Thicke's "Dreamworld" video, The Killers' "A Dustland Fairytale", and recently Maxwell - "Bad Habits". Let's not forget the visually stunning video he directed for Rihanna's "Rehab".

Personally, I'm a huge proponent for the post-apocalyptic aesthetic. I have an obsession of sorts with media related to the subject. This video is sort of a modern take on Tupac's "California Love which was a modern take on the eighties movie "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" which was probably a modern take on something else. I like Mandler's use of fire and light. The colors are crisp and dark. The looks/wardrobe are befitting; stylish and contempo but still true to the theme. Overall I like the video way more than I like the song.

2 Spin Article's about Xtina

Christina Aguilera's officially gone from "Dirrty" to nerdy.

After venturing into raunchy R&B and jazzy torch songs, the pop star's next album is shaping up to include a blog-a-rific parade of indie faves, with edgy Sri Lankan MC M.I.A., electropunks Ladytron, and Brooklyn-based songwriter/singer Santigold just emerging as Aguilera's latest announced collaborators.

Calling in to her own online radio station on aperadio.com, Aguilera named those artists, but didn't reveal too many details about her album, which is expected to be released in late 2009 or early 2010. "I know I can't let too much out the bag too soon," she said [via MTV]. "I just can't, 'cause I really want you guys to be surprised and to experience firsthand what I'm talking about or what I'm not talking too much about."

As previously reported, Aguilera's been working closely with Australian solo artist Sia, who rose to fame via her lead vocals for Zero 7, and other rumored collaborators have included Le Tigre and Goldfrapp, although Aguilera's reps have yet to confirm their participation.

Photobucket

Christina Aguilera sure has come a long way from her "Genie in a Bottle" days. For her upcoming September album, Light & Darkness, she recorded songs with British electronic acts Goldfrapp and Ladytron, plus former Zero 7 singer Sia, as SPIN.com reported last summer.

Now, Perez Hilton says that über-feminist punk group Le Tigre will join "Xtina" in the studio to work on the album.

Known for their bold lyrics and outspoken support of gay/lesbian and women's rights, Le Tigre had been on a musical hiatus since 2007. Dogged by rumors of a split, singer Kathleen Hanna (formerly of the "riot grrrl" band Bikini Kill) took to the group's MySpace in April to proclaim that Le Tigre had not broken up. And now comes this news.

In fact, Sia might be the one responsible for getting Le Tigre on board with the project. She and bandmember JD Samsom have been romantically linked -- and as she told SPIN.com, she thinks Christina is "rad"!

I sees it & I needs it.

As she proved in this summer’s Star Trek, Zoë Saldana shines when she’s surrounded by guys. Happily, the 31-year-old actress has another high-testosterone sci-fi epic in the works: James Cameron’s hotly anticipated special-effects bonanza Avatar, set in the 22nd century. Meanwhile, photographer Michael Roberts beams Saldana back to Harlem’s glamorous past, while the author reads the Hollywood tea leaves for her immediate future.
By Krista Smith WEB EXCLUSIVE August 18, 2009

Zoë Saldana likes being the girl in guys’ movies. This past summer, as Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek, she locked lips with Spock aboard the androcentric U.S.S. Enterprise, knocking the popcorn out of the laps of Trekkies everywhere. “I love acting with men,” she says. “I tend to gravitate toward roles in movies where I get to be the only girl.”
Zoe Saldana

This Christmas, the self-professed sci-fi fanatic and classically trained ballerina will return to the screen for more testosterone. Saldana, 31, will try to solidify her place in the Hollywood hierarchy with James Cameron’s Avatar—quite possibly the most anticipated movie in years (and, at a rumored cost of more than $350 million, certainly the most expensive). Written by Cameron—with uniquely Cameron-esque ingenuity—Avatar is set in the 22nd century, amid a war between earthlings and the once peaceful indigenous tribe of a distant planet. Cameron buffs starved by the studio’s strict muzzle will at least be pleased to know that the film, more than a decade in the planning, was shot in 3-D and boasts never-before-seen special effects. “The story is so compelling,” says Saldana. “It’s definitely going to be one of those movies you have to watch more than once.”

Avatar isn’t Saldana’s first brush with cinematic royalty. Her breakthrough, in 2004, occurred in the Spielberg-directed Tom Hanks vehicle The Terminal. “I was 25, and all of a sudden I heard ‘Steven wants to see you.’ It was mind-boggling,” she says.

Photobucket

It’s a role she might never have landed had she not stolen the screen in Center Stage, the niche hit about ballet-school competition that may have unintentionally spawned every subsequent dance movie and reality show. “Ballet has always been my first passion, but I simply didn’t have the feet, and I have way too much pride and ambition to just be in the corps,” she says.

Up next are roles in Takers, a heist movie starring Hayden Christensen, and Neil LaBute’s Death at a Funeral, featuring James Marsden, Chris Rock, and Danny Glover. But don’t expect this native New Yorker to allow her ethnicity to define her career. “I’ve done roles that anybody would have done,” she says. “I’ve never helped any girl get the quarterback. I left with the quarterback.”

Given this type of moxie, it seems doubtful that Saldana will end up in anyone’s corps.

Best Weekend Ever: Birthday Edition.

Photobucket
My birthday weekend was spectacular. Had a great surprise party put together by my roommate. Some of my best buds were in the building. We played a series of inappropriate games and enjoyed each others company. I even smashed my face in the cake for tehe's and giggles. Friday we went to dinner at Marlows Tavern for dinner, it wasn't a birthday dinner, it was dinner and it just happened to be my birthday. I sipped Woodchuck Cider and enjoy myself. Special shout out to everyone who came to both of events. Saturday I had sushi, saw District 9 & then I sat in Subway at Atlantic Station and had iced tea and chewed the fat with some friends. Later that night I got laid (2nd time in 3 days, I got laid Wednesday too, FTW). Sunday I went to a local coffee spot and made gallons of creative kool-aid with one of my new writing partners. We're working on this sci-fi project, it was crazy. Finally, to top it all off. I had dinner at Gordan Biersch with some people from Deeper Love and I had a blast. We shut the place down. I had to write about this because it's so rare that I have a weekend this relaxed and entertaining.

until next time.
all my love.

check out Calvin Harris's new video for the single "Ready For The Weekend". I honestly think Calvin Harris is one of the best electronic artist out right now. His last album [I Created Disco] was freaking super, I listened to "Colors" yesterday. It's a must have for the collection, it's great for casual gatherings and quiet evenings at home. His new album (2nd) album Ready for the Weekend is set to be released on August 17, 2009. Featuring his #1 single "I'm Not Alone" and his second single "Ready for the Weekend", that actually just came out a few days ago (August 10). Check it out. Comment.

a short film.

Photobucket

Back in April I heard Spike Jonze and Kanye we're collaborating on a short film. The film entitled "We Were Once a Fairy Tale" will be released on iTunes September 8th. I'm assuming it's the video for the "See U In My Nightmares" single (if it's a single) because the title is one of the lyrics. I'm interested to see how this looks visually and how Kanye performs as an actor. You know I have a thing for dynamic duos, I'm sure this is going to be pretty amazing, it's fucking Spike Jonze.

Here's a spoiler (aka synopsis):

In the film, Kanye plays himself drunk at a club acting belligerent and boastful, telling starstruck club-goers that the song playing in the club is his. He wanders into a side room where he encounters a beautiful woman. They start having sex and then he passes out on her leopard print dress. When he comes to, he finds himself in the VIP room with his pants down – he was hallucinating and fucking the pillow. The realization startles him and he rushes to the bathroom where he vomits what look like rose petals.

Then it gets weird.

Kanye finds a bowie knife in the bathroom and cuts into his stomach, spilling a torrent of more petals. He digs in the knife deeper and then with his hand rips out a small furry rodent, like a demon, only its quite cute. When Kanye realizes it’s connected to him with an umbilical cord, he pulls it hard, ripping it out of him for good. He then puts the demon on the sink and hands him a tiny bowie knife to fit the critter’s scale who then uses it to commit hari kari.

The short, written and directed by Spike Jonze, walks the fine line between self aggrandizement and self mockery that runs through all of Kanye’s endeavors. But the filmmaking is on point, with cinematography and sound design that authentically renders that feeling of being really disoriented in a nightclub. One doesn’t need to love Kanye to love the film, but the Jonze short takes what people love and hate about Kanye’s persona and then pushes it into a new, trippy realm. And in case you’re wondering, the answer is no, Kanye still can’t act. The film features the song “See you in my Nightmares” from 808s and Heartbreaks, remixed and pretty severely tweaked by Spike Jonze’s brother and N.A.S.A.‘s Squeak E. Clean (Sam Spiegel).

I'm Jaded.

I'm jaded and I'm not even 23 years old. I was chatting with one of my yahoo buddies this morning, the topic; relationships---long story short, he asked me how my love life was and I told him: "it is what it is I guess, just waiting on my next heartbreak..." and I wasn't kidding. Though romance isn't always at the forefront of my mind sometimes I get a bogged down in it. Recently I've been walking down these seemingly illuminated paths with a vigor and excitement only to be led into darkness, forcing me to find my way through the shadows feeling empty. I guess what it all boils down to is timing? I don't know. It doesn't help that I've been acting out lately. Doing things that I would have rather done in a different mental capacity. I don't regret these things at all, but I feel like they occurred because I felt out of control and I used these situations to gain control, my attempts (though enjoyable) didn't give me the emotional or mental resolution I sought. I wrote this killer poem that sort of captured all of this, emotion shit. It started off as a random thought and bloomed from there. I would post it but that would be cheesy. Poems and self reflection aside, I'm still jaded. I hate it. But enough toiling through the my thoughts. If I figure it out maybe I'll write some more. Hope all is well with yall. Be cool.
